Algonquin Books, an imprint of Hachette Book Group, commissioned Steven Noble to render a custom book jacket cover illustration for their new novel called “Beep” by Bill Roorbach. The woodcut illustration depicts Beep with the energetic and sprightly spirit of a squirrel monkey with elements of the rainforest treetop leaves over a city sidewalk.
BEEP is a darkly humorous yet serious novel about a Costa Rican squirrel monkey named Beep who sets out to find his mate, becomes stowed away in a young girl’s backpack and flies to New York City for a rollicking adventure which includes freeing the Brooklyn Zoo animals and saving the natural world from the impact of humanity. Bill Roorback’s storytelling is surprising, perceptive, and deeply engrossing as he balances Beep’s unexpected adventure while offering a meditation on the interconnection of all life and man’s responsibility to care for the earth.
